1000 Trees
This year, the first stage of an interesting project by the British architectural studio Heatherwick, known as the "Thousand Trees", should be completed in Shanghai, China. This unique project, which goes beyond the parameters of a mere building and is literally a topographic element for the city, is another of the many projects implemented in China that define new trends in urban architecture.
As the name of the project suggests, trees play an important role in it. It is a structure in the shape of a hill filled with green trees. It is the greenery that plays a crucial role here and largely obscures the true appearance of the entire terraced structure. It is supposed to be a multifunctional building, the uniqueness of which lies in the fact that in the middle of a modern, built-up metropolis with a flat profile, it creates a de-facto landscape element in the form of a large, green hill, resp. two hills, as the whole complex will have two parts.
This is not the first major project implemented in Shanghai for the British architectural studio Heatherwick. In 2010, the studio designed a British pavilion for the Expo World Exhibition. As already mentioned, the current project consists of two parts. The first of the two "mountains" is now being completed. The total built-up area will be 300,000 m2 and non-traditional buildings will be perfectly integrated into the surrounding environment.
